What team cognitive load is
Team cognitive load is the aggregate mental work a team is carrying at a given moment. It includes the meetings on every calendar, the communications backlog, the recovery debt accumulated across members, and the relative variance of those signals over time.
It is one useful way to understand knowledge work. Output matters, but so do the conditions and human effort that produced it.
Why surveys do not measure load
Pulse surveys ask people to describe their experience at a point in time. Wearable and work signals provide a different kind of evidence. Neither is complete on its own, and they are more useful when considered together.
A live cognitive load reading does not require the team to step out of the work to report on it.
