Not all wearable data is equally useful
Wearables produce a huge amount of data, and most of it has little to do with how someone will perform at work that day. Step counts and generic activity scores are largely irrelevant to cognitive capacity. The metrics that matter most are the ones connected to recovery: sleep quality and duration, heart rate variability trends, and resting heart rate.
These three, read together over time, give a reasonable picture of how recovered someone's system is, which in turn correlates with attention, patience and decision quality.
The devices in practical use
Oura is currently the most established option for this kind of continuous recovery tracking, largely because it is worn overnight consistently and its sleep and readiness data are well validated. Whoop and Apple Watch are increasingly viable alternatives as their recovery-focused metrics have matured, and support for both is expanding via API integrations such as Vital.
The specific device matters less than whether someone wears it consistently. A good device worn inconsistently produces a noisier, less trustworthy pattern than a more basic device worn every night.
Why the trend matters more than the device
Every wearable brand calculates its metrics slightly differently, which means comparing absolute numbers across devices is not meaningful. What is meaningful is the trend a single device shows for a single person over weeks, compared against that same person's own history.
This is why switching devices frequently is unhelpful: it resets the baseline each time, and a few weeks of continuity are worth more than a marginally better spec sheet.
What to be sceptical of
- Single-night readings, which are noisy and easily explained by alcohol, travel or illness.
- Any score presented as a single number without visibility into the trend behind it.
- Cross-device comparisons, since HRV and readiness algorithms are not standardised across manufacturers.
Bringing wearable data into a working day
The genuine value of wearable data at work comes from combining it with other signals, particularly calendar structure, so a low-recovery morning can be weighed against an already demanding day. On its own, a recovery score is interesting. Combined with someone's schedule, it becomes something they can actually act on.
